The England Hockey Board Single System for player development has been in place for a number of years now. Initial results are very encouraging but it is a system that is still developing and we would always welcome any feedback from coaches, teachers, parents or players.

Single System Player Pathway

Introduction to the Player Pathway in Derbyshire

Development Centres (DCs) are local training centres for Under 13–17 age groups. They are the next step in hockey’s Player Pathway after school and club. Any player can attend the Derbyshire DCs. Selection or nomination is not required. The Derbyshire Hockey Association will organise and run DCs at the beginning of each hockey season. Players will receive regular training followed by a period of competition. The combination of training and competition allows players to develop in a variety of situations and ensures that they are assessed in more than one competitive environment.

The centres are ‘local’ so that players do not have to travel long distances to attend. Players should attend the centre most convenient for them, and can move between centres  on different dates to gain the offered number of hours coaching.

The next step on the Player Pathway is Academy Centres (ACs). These are training centres for the Under 13–17 age group players who have been assessed and selected at DCs. Also, players who have been involved at a Junior Regional Performance Centre in the previous cycle, may attend. There is one AC in Derbyshire – this is County level representative hockey. The Centre will offer training, followed by a period of competition. Players at ACs will be assessed and may be selected for their nearest Regional Performance Centre.

Preparation and training at DC and AC will cover a number of hours of coaching, followed by a similar period of competition. The combination of training and competition allows players to develop in a variety of situations and ensures that they are assessed in more than one competitive environment.
